The marketing team at Vans Europe approached me to create an event experience and content piece in celebration of a very exciting collaboration between Vans Vault, Leica Cameras, and legendary skateboarder/photographer Ray Barbee. After some in-depth discussion around the motivations and inspirations of the collaboration, we defined a creative concept that celebrated its core principles. To do this we partnered with 3 of Europe’s most prolific skate photographers to explore Ray’s mantra of; ‘the joy is in capturing the journey’. Working with the Vans x Leica D-Lux 7 James Griffiths (@spliffiths), Rafal Wojnowski (@rafski), and Sara Parson-Texas (@parson_texas) documented 2 weeks of their lives, resulting in a varied collection of images that highlighted the depth and creativity of the skate scenes they represent. These images were then curated into a photo exhibition alongside a collection of Ray’s images to announce the launch of the collection and gather the local community. We also translated these images into a 28-page photo zine for visitors to take away and held a collection of talks and workshops to help inspire the next generation of skate photographers.
